COMPLETE- Hamlet (Shakespeare in the Park)
Show Dates: Sept. 30 & Oct 1, 7, 8, 2022
Audition Dates: July 25 & 26, 2022

Auditions for this season’s Shakespeare in the Park, Hamlet, will be on July 25 & 26, 2022 at 7 pm.  You only need to attend one night of auditions.  This production will be directed by Jonathan Ray. The production will be performed at Southside Park in Newton.

Hamlet is a tragedy; a ghost story of murder and revenge, streamlined and set in a Gothic milieu. Original songs and background music were created for this production.

No experience is required! We plan to cast 15-30 actors ages 14 and up. There are roles for performers with varying degrees of experience. The director is open to non-traditional casting, both in age and especially in gender, and some actors may be cast in more than one role.  All ethnicities are welcome.

Everyone will participate in cold readings from the script. Actors may prepare a monologue of 1-2 minutes in length, but this is not required. Excerpts from Hamlet’s more famous speeches are suggested for any male or female actor seriously interested in a major role such as Hamlet, Claudius, Polonius, Gertrude, Ophelia, or the 1st Player.

Although this is not a musical, several performers will sing, notably Ophelia and the gravedigger. You may be asked to perform a few bars of a folk song. You may choose to prepare accordingly if you wish, singing in a folksy style. This audition will be short and to the point.

Singing Suggestions

For Ophelia:

Greensleeves; Where Have All The Flowers Gone? Hallelujah and Suzanne (Leonard Cohen); Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell), Barbara Allen, Wildwood Flower, At Seventeen (Janis Ian).

For Gravedigger:

John Henry, If I Had a Hammer, Mr. Bojangles, This Land is Your Land, We Shall Overcome, Tom Dooley.

You must be available for all performances which are scheduled for September 30 and Oct 1, 7, 8, 2022.  There is a potential High school field trip for Hamlet on October 20, 2022.  Please bring your list of rehearsal conflicts with you. You MUST be able to attend all of the tech week (the week before the show opens) unless in rare emergency cases an exception is approved before being cast by the director.

Mark your calendars and plan to come and have some fun at auditions!  If you have any questions, please call The Green Room Community Theatre at (828) 464-6583.
